Replicated DVDs are commercially manufactured DVDs. Movies rented or purchased from a movie retail outlet are replicated DVDs. Differing from CDs, DVDs have a higher capacity and provide a medium to create rich content.
The most common DVD product manufactured at Regency Media is a DVD5 which holds a single layer of 4.7GB (90 minutes of video). We also produce many DVD9, a dual layer disc which holds up to 8.5GB (160 minutes of video). We also produce DVD10, which is a double sided DVD holding up to 9.4GB and 180 minutes of video (split over 2 sides). A DVD10 is unique in that the disc must be flipped over to play the other side, much an old vinyl record.
DVD Replication runs start at 500 units, if you require fewer discs, please see DVD Duplication.
DVD Replication Process
Much like CD Replication the DVD replication process begins with a DVD master. Our mastering technicians test the integrity of the disc, and then make a “glass master” (metal disc with digital data converted to dots and grooves on the surface). This glass master is then inserted into a replicating machine, which “stamps” the surface impressions of the data into heated polycarbon, moulding the content into the plastic. This plastic mould is then covered with a thin layer of aluminium, creating the reflective surface for a DVD player laser to read from. For DVD9, this process is repeated with a semi-transparent 2nd layer of content. The 2 layers are then glued together. This is also the case for DVD10, however neither layer is semi-transparent, instead the disc must be flipped over.
Moulded discs are then screen printed or offset printed with custom artwork.
The standard turnaround for the replication process is 8-10 working days. With a longer turnaround (35 days or more), large volumes may be manufactured offshore at amazing prices with the Regency Media quality guarantee.
DVD Replication Artwork
Replicated DVDs are printed using commercial offset printers (CMYK) or commercial screen printers. All DVD Replication artwork must be provided as CMYK or Pantone (screen print), at a resolution of 300dpi. Print ready PDF files are preferred.
